Are you ready for the adventure of your life? Ultra Roztocze is calling you. We invite you to a presentation of the longest and most demanding route of the event – a 67-kilometre trail through the unspoilt beauty of Roztocze. You have twelve hours to complete it. Is that enough time to take in the unique wonders of the May countryside? That depends on you and your training.
Description of the race route.
We set off from Zwierzyniec at six in the morning. Your first destination? The majestic Bukowa Góra. The route passes through a strict nature reserve, where mossy trees and rotting trunks resemble a primeval forest. The first few kilometres will pass quickly and before you know it you will be crossing the railway line that winds through the Shozd area, known as the “green canyon”. The first checkpoint is exactly at the tenth kilometre. Once you have refreshed yourself and replenished your supplies at the water stations, set off towards the border of the Roztocze National Park. At the fifteenth kilometre we climb to the top of the solitary Kamienna Góra, where the mysterious Crying Stone awaits us. According to legend, a beautiful girl was betrayed and turned to stone. The curse can only be lifted if the girl kisses her lover at this sacred place on Midsummer’s Eve, on one condition – that she has never committed treason. From here it is only three kilometres to the second checkpoint at Górecko Stary.
Continuing our journey, we follow the picturesque trail through the Szum Reserve. The trail winds along a gently winding stream with an unusual rusty colour. You’ll alternate between walking along the water and up high slopes. The bed of the wild stream is adorned with “sounds” (waterfalls) that are spaced farther apart than those on the Tanev River. Be careful on the slippery footbridges as there is a risk of losing your balance. Your route then takes you through the forest to Tarnowola, past the quarry in Józefów and to another checkpoint near the observation tower. This is a good opportunity to refresh yourself at the buffet before starting the second part of your journey. Babia Dolina, your next destination, is an extraordinary place and one of the jewels and symbols of Roztocze. Its sheer rock walls are impressive. For those who prefer to travel at a leisurely pace, this is the perfect time to look for preserved traces of flora and fauna dating back millions of years. After enjoying the enchanting views of Babia Dolina, continue on to Czartowe Pole, named after the legend that in ancient times ‘only devils roamed there’. This was thought to explain the many fires and floods that plagued the area. Contrary to local legend, we decided to build a watering hole for your convenience. Just remember to drink quickly so as not to tempt the evil spirits.
If you are hungry, eight kilometres after Czartowe Pole you will reach Oseredko, where our dedicated volunteers will give you a warm welcome. Even the biggest appetites will be satisfied. Be sure to check your shoelaces before leaving this checkpoint, as you will soon be passing through the famous ‘beaver field’, which can be as tempting as gold. If you ever doubt whether you are on the right track, remember that the local mud is said to have miraculous properties. It’s a unique experience and highly recommended! Once you’ve conquered the swampy terrain, your thoughts may turn to the next sanctuary. Before you head to the Gargamel Bar for a refreshing drink and a mug of beer, you can admire the enchanting Szumy nad Tanwia River. These waterfalls, also known as Szypoty, Sopoty and Porohy, cross the quiet streams of the Jeleń and Tanew rivers. These cascades were formed as a result of tectonic movements during the folding of the Carpathians. A short walk past the castle, also known as the church, will take you to the iconic Gargamel Bar.
After tasting hop nectar and other delicacies, you will set off for the final five kilometres. Your legs will carry you to the finish line, where, as always, you will be greeted by the enthusiastic Sławek and his team, as well as families, friends and wonderful ladies from the Rural Women’s Circle of Susiec and the surrounding area. There is no better combination than the sweet taste of victory and the flavours of Roztocze cuisine.
Doesn’t that sound tempting? Ultra Roztocze 2023 promises to be an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the majesty of nature. So lace up your running shoes and get ready to explore Roztocze with its gorges, wetlands, quarries and climbs.
