A celebration of sport, culture and natural beauty.
For three decades, the Swiss Canyon Trail has been a beacon for trail running enthusiasts from around the world. Nestled in the heart of Switzerland’s Jura Mountains, this iconic event not only offers challenging courses, but also immerses participants in the rich cultural heritage and breathtaking scenery of the Val-de-Travers. With six unique race distances – 166K, 111K, 81K, 51K, 31K and 16K – the Swiss Canyon Trail has something for every level of trail runner. However, the two longest races, the 166K and 111K, stand out as monumental tests of endurance and spirit.
A Storied History
The Swiss Canyon Trail, originally known as the Trail de l’Absinthe, was founded in 1994. Over the years, it has grown from a niche event to one of Europe’s most prestigious trail races, attracting more than 3,000 runners each year. Renamed in 2015, the event still honours its roots and celebrates the cultural heritage of the Jura region, including its association with absinthe, the “green fairy”.
More than just a race, the Swiss Canyon Trail is a meticulously organised event where the satisfaction of the participants is paramount. The organisers continually refine the experience based on runner feedback, ensuring a seamless blend of challenge, comfort and camaraderie. The dedication of over 6,000 volunteers is integral to the success of the event, supporting and encouraging runners at every stage.
The Swiss Canyon Ultra Trail: 100 Miles of Pure Adventure
The crown jewel of the 30th edition is the debut of the 166K race, a gruelling 100-mile course that promises to push even the most experienced ultra runners to their limits. At 166 kilometres and a staggering 8,147 metres in elevation, this course is not for the faint of heart.
Participants embark on a journey through the picturesque Val de Travers and northern Vaud, encountering awe-inspiring natural landmarks. The trail winds through the majestic Aiguilles de Baulmes, offers breathtaking views from the Chasseron and passes through the charming village of St-Croix. The highlight of the route, however, is the Creux du Van, Switzerland’s most famous gorge. Here, runners are rewarded with panoramic views that are nothing short of magical.
Every kilometre of the 166km course presents a new challenge, from steep climbs and technical descents to exposed ridges. But it’s not just a test of physical endurance. The 100-mile race is a journey of self-discovery, where participants find strengths they never knew they had. Whether it’s catching a sunrise on a summit or digging deep into the toughest sections, every runner achieves a personal triumph.
The 111K: A Technical and Emotional Odyssey
For those looking for a slightly shorter but equally challenging challenge, the 111K is a compelling option. Covering 114.8 kilometres and climbing 5,294 metres, the course offers a rich tapestry of terrain and experiences. From rolling hills to steep climbs and rapid descents, the 111K is a masterclass in technical trail running.
The course also showcases the natural beauty and cultural essence of the Jura region. Runners traverse lush forests, picturesque valleys and rugged ridges, with each section offering a unique blend of effort and reward. The variety of the course keeps participants on their toes, pushing them to adapt and overcome. Along the way they will encounter the same legendary landmarks as the 166K, including the Creux du Van and the Chasseron.
But the 111K is more than a physical test; it’s a deeply personal experience. As runners find their rhythm, they connect with nature, their fellow participants and their inner selves. It’s a race that transcends competition and offers moments of deep reflection and joy.
More Than a Race
The Swiss Canyon Trail is a unique combination of sport, culture and nature. Each participant becomes part of a great tradition, exploring the Jura’s heritage while creating their own unforgettable memories. From the mythical Green Fairy to the tireless volunteers, every aspect of the event contributes to an atmosphere of warmth and community.
Whether running the monumental 166km, the challenging 111km or one of the shorter distances, runners are guaranteed an experience beyond the ordinary. It’s a celebration of endurance, discovery and the incomparable beauty of the Swiss Jura.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Swiss Canyon Trail invites participants to push their limits and create stories that will last a lifetime. In the words of many who have crossed the finish line, the Swiss Canyon Trail is not just a race – it’s a journey into the extraordinary.
