The Stubai Ultratrail: Where Alpine Majesty Meets Trail Running Excellence.
A Land of Trails and Peaks
Deep in Austria’s Tyrol lies the Stubai Valley, a natural masterpiece of rugged peaks, sweeping alpine vistas and a network of trails that have captured the hearts of adventurers for generations. From towering 3,000 metre peaks to lush valleys, this alpine paradise is a playground for climbers, hikers and trail runners alike.
In 2025, the Stubai Valley will take its trail running heritage to new heights with the Stubai Ultratrail – powered by SCOTT, an event that has become synonymous with endurance, beauty and adventure. This year’s race, under the evocative theme “EPIC TRAILS, EPIC VALLEY”, promises to deliver a trail running experience like no other, with refreshed routes and the introduction of the legendary Stubai High Trail as the centrepiece challenge.
The Stubai Ultratrail: An Epic Challenge
The Stubai Valley is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, with a dense network of footpaths winding through unspoilt countryside. From gentle trails suitable for beginners to challenging via ferratas and glacier expeditions, the valley offers something for every level of adventurer. For trail runners, however, it is the convergence of natural beauty and technical challenge that makes Stubai a bucket list destination. With the addition of the Stubai High Trail – a challenging route that showcases the rugged elegance of the region – the 2025 Ultratrail transforms the valley into the ultimate stage for trail running.
Beauty Meets Endurance
Whether you are an experienced ultrarunner looking for the ultimate test or a trail enthusiast looking for a taste of alpine adventure, the Stubai Ultratrail offers a range of routes to suit all levels. Each race starts and finishes in the charming village of Neustift, creating a festive atmosphere where participants and spectators come together to celebrate the sport.
Stubai High Trail: The pinnacle of alpine running
The crown jewel of the 2025 Ultratrail, this 78-kilometre course with 5,930 metres of elevation gain is reserved for the most experienced trail runners. Running the entire length of the Stubai High Trail, competitors will navigate technical, high-altitude terrain ranging from 2,100 to 2,900 metres above sea level. The route passes through a series of eight mountain huts, offering brief glimpses of cultivated landscapes amidst the untamed alpine wilderness. Runners will have to cover in one day what most hikers take six to eight days to complete, making this a gruelling yet deeply rewarding experience. With only 100 places available, entry is as exclusive as it is challenging.
A Festival of Trail Running
Stubai Ultra: beauty meets endurance
This 59 kilometre race with 4,280 metres of elevation gain offers a quintessential alpine trail running experience. From tranquil meadows to dramatic rock formations, runners are treated to an ever-changing landscape. Highlights include the Kalkkögel mountains, often referred to as the ‘Dolomites of North Tyrol’, and the Elfer massif, whose towering peaks provide a dramatic backdrop. Adding to its allure, parts of this route have been included in the 2023 World Championships, giving it an air of prestige.
Stubai Classic: Compact yet spectacular
For those seeking a shorter but equally scenic route, the 31-kilometre Stubai Classic offers 2,325 metres of elevation gain through some of the valley’s most iconic landscapes. Starting in Neustift, runners will follow the original 2023 World Cup course, traverse the picturesque Sunnenseit’n Trail and cross the stunning suspension bridge before looping back into the village. It’s a course that combines challenge with accessibility, making it a favourite with a wide range of participants.
Stubai Express: A journey through two valleys
At 24 kilometres and 1,305 metres in altitude, the Stubai Express offers a unique blend of natural beauty and technical challenge. The route links the Sunnenseit’n Trail with the wild, romantic landscapes of the Pinnistal Valley, offering runners spectacular views on both sides of the Stubai Valley. The first half of the race takes runners over the valley’s iconic suspension bridge, while the second half winds along the tranquil Besinnungsweg trail before returning to Neustift.
Stubaier Sonnenseit’n Trail: Short, sweet and breathtaking
Perfect for beginners or those looking for a quick alpine run, the 16-kilometre Sunnenseit’n Trail packs a punch with 750 metres of elevation gain. Starting in Neustift, runners ascend to the Kartnallhöfe farms before following the scenic Sunnenseit’n Trail to the 105-metre suspension bridge, which offers breathtaking views of the Stubai mountains.
Prepare for Adventure
The Stubai Ultratrail is more than a race – it is a celebration of trail running culture and the breathtaking beauty of the Austrian Alps. The village of Neustift serves as the hub of activity, transforming into a vibrant festival ground where runners, fans and locals come together to cheer, celebrate and share the excitement. Whether you’re looking to push your limits on one of the most challenging courses in the Alps, or simply take in the unparalleled beauty of the valley, the Stubai Ultratrail promises to be an unforgettable adventure.
