Hungary's biggest trail running event

Salomon Ultra-Trail Hungary is the largest event in Hungary for trail running enthusiasts, offering a blend of athletic challenge and breathtaking natural beauty. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Pilis and Visegrád Mountains, Salomon Ultra-Trail Hungary invites runners from around the world to experience Hungary’s rich landscape, history and culture while testing their endurance and spirit.

Just 30 minutes from Budapest, the charming town of Szentendre serves as the base for the Salomon Ultra-Trail Hungary. Known for its colourful winding streets and rich artistic heritage, Szentendre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The race finishes along the picturesque banks of the Danube, giving runners a grand finale in the historic city centre.

The course runs through the ‘green heart’ of Hungary, winding through the vast beech and oak forests of the Pilis and Visegrád mountains. The course includes a mix of easy running sections and some challenging climbs and descents, making it accessible to both experienced and newer trail runners.

History of Salomon Ultra-Trail Hungary

The idea for the Salomon Ultra-Trail Hungary was born in 2013. Over the next year, the team carefully mapped and finalised the route, and in the autumn of 2014, the first public announcement of the race was made. Initially, two distances were offered: 111 kilometres and 55 kilometres. The inaugural race took place in May 2015, and just two years later the event had become a sold-out phenomenon.

In 2016, the organisers added the Salomon Visegrád Trail, followed by the introduction of the longer Szentlászló Trail. By 2018, the UTH had made its mark on the world stage, becoming part of the Ultra-Trail World Tour as a Discovery Race. In 2020, the UTH was also recognised as a qualifier for the Western States Endurance Run, cementing its place as one of Europe’s must-see ultra trail races.

The Spirit of the Race

The course is designed to encourage fast running and although there are technical sections, much of it is accessible to runners who may not be experienced powerhouses. The combination of different terrains, from gentle forest paths to steep climbs, makes for an exciting and rewarding challenge.

The event embodies the spirit of adventure, with participants needing not only physical stamina but also a solid sense of self-confidence. Unlike many other organised events, the Salomon Ultra-Trail Hungary emphasises the runner’s ability to take care of themselves throughout the race.

Self-Sufficiency and Required Gear

The Salomon Ultra-Trail Hungary is a partially self-supported event, which means that participants are responsible for their physical, mental and logistical well-being between the aid stations. Each runner is expected to carry certain mandatory equipment throughout the race. This ensures that participants are well prepared for the unpredictable nature of trail running in mountainous terrain.

Mandatory Equipment for Normal Conditions:

Headlamp: Essential for running in low light, especially during early morning or evening hours.
Water Bottle or Flask (minimum 1 liter): Staying hydrated between aid stations is critical.
Photo ID: For identification purposes.
Mobile Phone: To ensure safety, participants must have a phone in standby mode at all times.
Waterproof Jacket with Hood: To protect against sudden changes in weather conditions.

Additional Gear for Rainy or Cold Weather:

Cap or Scarf: To keep warm in cold temperatures.
Long-Sleeve Top: An extra layer for added warmth.
Survival Blanket (minimum 140 x 200 cm): For emergencies.

The organisers may check for this equipment at any point during the race and failure to comply may result in disqualification. It is essential that runners leave each aid station with sufficient food and water to reach the next aid station, as no outside assistance is allowed between aid stations. The race is designed to encourage self-reliance, making it an authentic trail experience.
