A jewel of the Carpathians: Retezat National Park

Retezat National Park is one of Romania’s most renowned mountain destinations. Nestled in the Retezat-Godeanu mountain range, the park offers a wealth of landscapes and distinctive geological features, making it one of the most sought-after destinations for mountain explorers and adventure enthusiasts. Its popularity soared when it was included in the competition for the 7 new natural wonders of the world. The park is home to Peleaga, the highest peak of the Retezat Massif, standing at an impressive 2,509 metres, closely followed by Păpușa Peak at 2,508 metres. Among the many wonders of the park are the remnants of the Quaternary glaciation, with numerous glacial lakes at altitudes between 1,700 and 2,300 metres. With over 58 permanent glacial lakes scattered across the terrain, Retezat is known as the “park with blue eyes”, reflecting its unspoilt and wild beauty. These glacial lakes, steep valleys and rugged ridges make the Retezat landscape distinctive and easily recognisable.
