Pirin Mountains: Where nature, adventure and heritage meet
Nestled in the heart of Bulgaria, the Pirin region is home to some of the country’s most iconic landscapes, including Bansko, Bulgaria’s most popular ski resort. While Bansko is a winter paradise for ski enthusiasts, the Pirin Mountains transform into a haven for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers during the summer months. With pristine trails, glacial lakes and opportunities for exploration, the region has something for everyone who loves the great outdoors.
Summer adventures in Pirin
In summer, the Pirin Mountains come alive with lush greenery and a wealth of outdoor activities. The well-marked trails cater for both hikers and cyclists, with varying degrees of difficulty, making them accessible to both beginners and experienced adventurers. For those seeking a deeper connection with nature, there are some 130 lakes scattered throughout the mountains, offering tranquil spots to relax or enjoy spectacular views. Exploring Pirin can be a one-day endeavour or an extended adventure. For those who enjoy longer trips, the region is equipped with mountain refuges and shelters that offer accommodation, allowing adventurers to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Most trails start from Bansko, but visitors can also take a minibus to the Wihren shelter (2,000m), which gives you a head start and takes you straight into the heart of the mountains, where the breathtaking views begin.
Pirin Ultra: The ultimate mountain challenge
For those seeking a true test of endurance, Pirin Ultra is an annual ultramarathon held in the heart of Pirin National Park. First organised in September 2016, Pirin Ultra has quickly gained international recognition and will be part of the prestigious World Skyrunning Series in 2019. The race attracts athletes from around the world, challenging them on technical trails that demand both physical and mental endurance. The competition showcases the dramatic beauty of Pirin and offers participants the chance to push their limits.
The eighth edition of the Pirin Ultra will take place from 12 to 15 September 2025, and participants will once again be able to choose from four routes:
Route A: 160 km – The longest and most gruelling route, Route A is designed for experienced ultramarathon runners who want to challenge themselves over 160 kilometres of rugged terrain.
Route B: 66 km – This iconic route, which has been part of the Skyrunning World Series, offers participants an intense skyrunning experience through some of the most beautiful parts of Pirin.
Route C: 38 km (Pirin Extreme) – Known as Pirin Extreme, this route offers a challenging yet shorter option for those who want to experience the steep and technical trails that make Pirin Ultra famous.
Route D: 25km – New for 2025, this shorter route is ideal for those who want to experience the magic of the Pirin Mountains without the extreme demands of the longer routes.
Each route is characterised by its technical and demanding terrain and none should be underestimated. Participants will face significant challenges as they navigate steep climbs, rocky trails and ever-changing weather. But the rewards are immense – breathtaking views of untouched wilderness, the thrill of overcoming obstacles and the camaraderie of fellow adventurers make Pirin Ultra a truly unique experience.
