Why Hochkönigman Stands Out

The Hochkönig is not just about running; it’s about immersion in nature, camaraderie and the thrill of conquering one of Europe’s most breathtaking and challenging terrains. Here are some of the reasons why this event is so popular:

  • Scenic beauty: The trails wind through the pristine alpine landscape of the Hochkönig massif, offering competitors and spectators views that are nothing short of spectacular.
  • Meticulous organisation: The routes are expertly marked with chalk spray, flags, signs and reflective materials to ensure the safety of participants. While some markings may be affected by the weather, GPS files are provided to aid navigation.
  • Commitment to safety: All participants are required to carry mandatory safety equipment, including maps, as part of the event’s strict adherence to international trail running standards.
  • Environmental awareness: The event emphasises environmental responsibility. Strict rules are in place to protect the natural environment and offences such as littering will result in immediate disqualification.

Preparing for Hochkönigman

Taking part in the Hochkönigman requires more than just enthusiasm – it requires preparation, both physical and logistical. Here are some tips to ensure a successful race:

  • Train for the terrain: With courses ranging from steep climbs to technical descents, incorporating hill and technical running into your training is crucial.
  • Gear up: Essential equipment includes weather-appropriate clothing, a map of the course, a GPS device and a first aid kit. Make sure your gear meets all safety requirements.
  • Hydration and nutrition: With aid stations strategically placed along the routes, planning your hydration and nutrition strategy is vital, especially on the longer trails.
  • Insurance: Mountain rescue insurance is strongly recommended as participants are responsible for the cost of rescue in the event of an emergency.
