Experience the Balkan differently
Balkaniada is a mountain race that has quickly gained recognition as one of the most exciting and challenging events in the heart of the Central Balkan National Park in Bulgaria. Known for its breathtaking scenery and varied terrain, the Central Balkan Mountains provide an exciting backdrop for runners, adventurers and nature lovers. Located in the centre of Bulgaria, the park is home to some of the most iconic routes and alpine trails in the Balkans, making it a hotspot for mountain runners, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
A thrilling mountain race in the heart of Bulgaria
The inaugural Balkaniada took place in 2021 in the historic town of Karlovo, which lies at the foot of the mountain. The town’s central square served as both the start and finish of the race, providing easy access to the many tourist routes that lead directly into the wild beauty of the Balkan Mountains. Since its first edition, Balkaniada has proven to be more than just a race; it is an adventure that pushes participants to their limits, combining the raw beauty of nature with the extreme demands of mountain running. The 2021 edition challenged athletes on two different courses – 44 kilometres and 25 kilometres – on the last day of July. As well as the rugged terrain, competitors had to contend with unpredictable weather, ranging from searing heat to thunderstorms later in the day. These conditions added an extra layer of difficulty to an already tough race. The event’s successful debut earned it a place in Bulgaria’s National Skyrunning Series and put Balkaniada firmly on the map as a premier skyrunning event.
Balkaniada - The Fifth Edition: 2025
The upcoming fifth edition of Balkaniada is set for 3 August 2025 and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Competitors will be able to choose from three different routes, each designed to suit different levels of skill and endurance.
44K Route: The main course, a 44 kilometre adventure, is the ultimate test for extreme runners. This route takes participants through the most challenging sections of the Central Balkan, including the alpine traverse from the Dobrila hut to the Botev hut. Runners will experience a combination of steep climbs, rocky paths and breathtaking views as they traverse the highest parts of the mountain.
25K Route: This mid-range option offers participants the chance to experience the rugged beauty of the Balkans without the extreme difficulty of the 44K. The course features challenging mountain terrain but is more accessible to runners looking for a balance of excitement and endurance.
10K Route: For those who want to enjoy the beauty of Stara Planina (the Bulgarian name for the Balkan Mountains) without pushing themselves too far, the 10K route offers a scenic and enjoyable experience. This route is perfect for beginners or those not yet ready for the longer and more challenging routes.
What makes Balkaniada so special is its location in the Central Balkan National Park. This national treasure is not only a hub for mountain runners, but also a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers and outdoor enthusiasts. The park is part of the famous international tourist route E3, known locally as the Kom-Emine Trail, which attracts adventurers from all over the world. Every summer, hundreds of visitors come to explore its iconic landmarks, including peaks, valleys and waterfalls.
A growing tradition of mountain running.
Since its inception, Balkaniada has grown in both size and reputation. What started as a local race is now a national event, attracting competitors from all over Bulgaria and beyond. The race is not only a test of endurance, but also an opportunity to experience the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Central Balkan region. The organisers have maintained the spirit of adventure and connection with nature that has made the race so popular, while striving to make each edition more exciting than the last.
